duplication versus replication

The following methods are available for copying your CD, DVD or Blu-ray master, allowing you to select the best method to suit your needs.

CD Duplication
The CD Duplication process uses 'copiers' to burn data content from your master CD onto another. A CD-R (recordable) is used for this process that has a blue/green recording surface. This is a photosensitive dye that a laser darkens in places to create a digital code that can be read by the laser in a CD player. A diamond-silver recordable surface is available at a slightly higher cost, should you wish your discs to appear just like CD-ROMs. Duplication is more cost effective for shorter runs, can have very fast turnaround times and have a number of printing options available. CD Replication
CD Replication involves creating a Glass Master, essentially a mould from which a stamp is created. Your CD-ROMs (Read Only Memory) are then 'pressed' using the master stamp creating pits in the surface and metallised to create the reflective coating required for the reading of the pits by the laser in a CD player. Finally a protective lacquer is added to create a top surface suitable for printing. Due to the inevitably higher set up costs with this process, replication is more suited to larger production runs. When printing larger production runs it is more cost effective to use screen-printing or offset (litho) printing methods) Click here to find out which print method is most suitable for you.

DVD Duplication
The DVD Duplication process uses 'copiers' to burn data content from your master DVD onto another. A DVD-R or DVD R (recordable) is used for this process that has a purple recording surface. This is a photosensitive dye that a laser darkens in places to create a digital code that can be read by the laser in most DVD players. The diamond-silver recordable surface is not yet available. Duplication is more cost effective for shorter runs, can have very fast turnaround times and has a number of printing options available. Blu-ray Duplication
The process for replicating Blu-rays involves the creation of a 'glass master'; this is a mould which enables a stamp to be created. Your Blu-ray discs are pressed by the master stamp which creates a pit into the surface and then metallises it to create a reflective coat. A HD player will read the pits via its laser. Finally a protective lacquer is added giving a top surface suitable for print. This process has higher sets up costs than duplication, which is why it is mostly suitable for larger quantities. We also recommend screen-printing or offset (litho) printing for your Blu-ray as it is more cost effective. Click here to find out which print method is most suitable for you.

Blu-ray Replication
The process for replicating Blu-rays involves the creation of a 'glass master'; this is a mould which enables a stamp to be created. Your Blu-ray discs are pressed by the master stamp which creates a pit into the surface and then metallises it to create a reflective coat. A HD player will read the pits via its laser. If you have a large run of CDs, DVDs or Blu-rays to produce, but you urgently need an advance supply you may find that a combination of the two methods is best.
